What does Neil Brand's 152 against Australia say about his Test future?

The story

Neil Brand, a former South Africa captain, made 152 for CSA XI against Australia's first-choice Test bowlers in a two-day tour game in Potchefstroom. The report says he dominated that attack and that his innings kept the home side competitive.

Neil Brand made 152 for CSA XI against a full-strength Australian attack in the two-day tour game in Potchefstroom, and Wisden's report presents it as a former South Africa captain getting on top of Test-class bowling. The innings looks stranger still next to his Test career. Brand has batted four times in men's Tests, across two matches against New Zealand in February 2024, and made 66 runs in total with a high score of 34. This one innings is worth more than his whole Test career with the bat.

What two Tests told us

Those four innings left him with a Test batting average of 16.5, against 33.36 for top-seven batters in men's Tests over the last two years. He looked a long way short of the standard. The 152 in Potchefstroom came against the attack of the side our ratings have as the best Test team in the world, with a 75% chance of beating an average side, and bowlers of that class do not hand out hundreds.

The doubt lies in the occasion. A two-day game has no result to play for, and Brand's only Tests were two matches against New Zealand in the same month, where 34 was his best in four attempts. Neither tells us how he bats when Australia have a Test to win. His Test case also rested on more than his batting. He took 8 for 171 from 39 overs in his first Test, and his eight Test wickets have cost 21.38 runs each, against a bowling average of 29.29 across men's Tests in the last two years.

A hard side to get back into

South Africa have managed well without him. Our ratings have them as the third-best Test side, with a 69% chance of beating an average side, and their recent Tests include a five-wicket win over Australia in June 2025 and a 408-run win over India in November 2025. A side winning like that gives selectors little reason to look back at a batter who averaged 16.5.

Brand's 152 gives them one, and his bowling gives them another. A batter who can make a big hundred against Australia's first-choice attack, and whose eight Test wickets cost 21.38 each, is worth a squad place as the spare batter who can also bowl useful overs for his captain. A place in the XI should wait until he makes runs like these in a match with a result riding on it.
