An Oddsworth Opinion
How much of India's T20 bowling attack is really Jasprit Bumrah?
The story
The Times of India reports that India's T20I bowling has been worse in 2026 without Jasprit Bumrah, conceding more runs per wicket and taking wickets less often. It argues that the West Indies series, on flat pitches and with catches dropped, has exposed how heavily the attack leans on him.
The Times of India · 11 October at 07:44 BSTOne Bumrah, two very different Indias: Numbers expose bowling dependenceRead the full storyThe Times of India has put numbers on what Indian fans already suspected. In 2026, India's T20I attack concedes more runs for each wicket and takes wickets less often whenever Jasprit Bumrah is missing. The West Indies series, played on flat pitches with chances going to ground, has made the point loudly. The premise is sound. Our ratings have Bumrah as the best men's T20 bowler in the world across every side, and second only on our IPL list.
What one bowler is worth
Bumrah's value comes in small, steady instalments, a dot ball squeezed out in the powerplay here and a yorker at the death there. Across four overs, those savings are the kind that settle a tight finish. A run-fest asks a different question of an attack.
In the second T20I at the JSCA International Stadium Complex, India made 249 for 5 and West Indies knocked off 252 for 4 in 18.3 overs. A chase that quick needs runs from almost every over, and Bumrah could only ever have bowled four of them. Even a perfect spell from him would have left most of that innings in other hands. He might well have slowed the chase. A total of 249 should still never rest on one man's spell, and however great he is, he remains one bowler with four overs.
The attack around him
The dependence the report describes is real, and India have chosen to live with it. They remain our top-rated men's T20 side, and a batting line-up that strong has long hidden whatever the bowling leaks. Dropped catches then turn any plan with the ball into a hope.
Our forecast makes India 67% favourites for Sunday's third T20I at the Holkar Cricket Stadium. That match will show whether anyone besides Bumrah can be trusted with the overs that decide a game.
India need a second strike bowler, and the time to find him is during a home series like this one, before Bumrah's absence costs them something bigger.
