Can Bangladesh make Darwin more than a moment?

The story

Hasan Mahmud says Bangladesh’s win over Australia has strengthened his belief that the team can reach the World Test Championship final. With Bangladesh fourth in the standings, he argues that their progress has made Test dominance a realistic ambition.

Hasan Mahmud says Bangladesh’s nine-wicket win over Australia in Darwin has made a World Test Championship final a realistic ambition. Fourth place in the standings gives that ambition substance. Our ratings still put Bangladesh ninth of ten men’s Test teams, with a 27% chance of beating an average side on neutral ground. Darwin changed what they can reasonably hope for; it has yet to settle what they can reliably do.

That distinction matters because the table rewards results already banked, while a final demands more of the same quality. Hasan is right to make the claim now, when the Australian win is fresh enough to change how he sees his side. The innings defeat that followed makes the claim worth examining.

The results around Darwin

Bangladesh had been building a case before Darwin. They beat Ireland by an innings and 47 runs and by 217 runs, then beat Pakistan by 104 runs and 78 runs. Those margins give substance to Hasan’s talk of dominance. They also give the Australia result company: this side has finished matches emphatically against other opponents.

Then comes the awkward passage in the ledger. Zimbabwe beat Bangladesh by an innings and 85 runs in June, and Australia beat them by an innings and 51 runs in the Test after Darwin. Those heavy defeats sit on either side of the victory Hasan holds up as evidence of a turning point. A side chasing a final has to keep its best result from looking isolated.

What Hasan can carry

Hasan’s own bowling offers the same lesson. He took nine wickets for 111 runs against Australia in Darwin, then no wickets for 67 runs in the next Test against them. Our ratings place him 24th of 50 men’s Test bowlers, worth 3.55 runs a match more than an average player. He is part of the case for improvement, and the swing between those matches shows how much work one spectacular performance leaves for the side.

Fourth place is worth defending. Bangladesh need the Pakistan wins to become a level they can repeat against other opponents, and their next landmark victory to carry through into the following Test. Hasan should keep talking about the final. His side must make Darwin look like a habit.
