An Oddsworth Opinion

How much can a fine Axar Patel spell prove?

Against Sri Lanka, Axar Patel took two wickets for eight runs in three overs. That is the kind of spell behind the view that he belongs with T20 cricket’s best, and it deserves to be taken seriously. Our ratings have him seventeenth among men’s T20 bowlers from every side, worth 2.55 runs a match more than an average player. That is a valuable bowler, though a place among the very best remains a larger claim. The argument starts in a fine spell and has to survive the rest of his cricket.

The England spells

In July, Patel took one wicket for 20 runs from four overs against England. In another match against England, he went wicketless for 63 runs from four overs. The first spell rewards the faith placed in him; the second shows how quickly four overs can undo an argument built around his best work. Across the last two years of men’s T20s, his bowling average has been 26.41, against 24.06 for bowlers over the same period. Those runs matter when the claim asks us to treat a good bowler as an elite one.

The case for control

Across those two years, Patel’s economy has been 7.99 runs an over, against 8.02 across men’s T20s. This is where the case for him is clearest: his overs cost slightly less than the broader standard, even though his wickets cost more. A bowler who can keep an innings in shape while his average lags the field is doing work worth keeping. It would be a peculiar way to praise that work, though, to promote it into proof that he is among the world’s leading bowlers.

What the recent wickets prove

Patel’s two wickets for 26 runs from 3.1 overs against West Indies added to the Sri Lanka spell and helped make the applause feel overdue. Both matches show why he keeps being trusted, but a judgement on his overall T20 bowling has to carry the England afternoon as well. His place in our ratings and his bowling average over the last two years both resist the larger title. Keep relying on Patel to deliver valuable overs. Calling his overall T20 bowling among the world’s best asks those overs to carry more than they have earned.
