An Oddsworth Opinion
The trouble with calling New Zealand v India a T20 rivalry
Fierce rivals is the billing for the five T20Is that begin at Hagley Oval on Thursday, and it is a generous one. Our forecasts give India roughly three chances in four in every match of the tour, in Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland and Hamilton alike, and nowhere across the five does New Zealand's chance rise above 27%. A rivalry, by most definitions, requires the other side to win now and then.
What the ratings say about the gap
The ICC's table is where the close-contest story comes from, with India second and New Zealand fourth, two places apart and easy to sell as a toss-up. Our men's T20 team ratings put the sides much further apart: India top of the ten, worth about 40 runs a match more than an average side, and New Zealand sixth, worth about 16. A side 40 runs better than average starts most evenings with the sort of head start that survives a lost toss and a damp outfield.
Recent form on both sides
New Zealand's last ten T20s give the ratings little to argue with: a home series against South Africa that swung match by match, a six-wicket defeat to Bangladesh in April, and one meeting with India, in March, that ended in a defeat by 96 runs. That last result is the only recent evidence of what happens when these two sides meet, and it is not the evidence of a rivalry.
India's ten run the other way, a long sequence of wins over Afghanistan, Japan, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, until West Indies beat them twice this month, by six wickets on 9 October and by 24 runs five days later. Two defeats in a home series is a wobble worth watching, and it is the only reason to look twice at a 73% call.

Who takes the series
The history is the respectable part of the rivalry case: 31 T20Is between the sides since 2007, India winning 19 and New Zealand 11, and 11 wins is a proper record, enough to explain why the word survives in the advertising. The rivalry is real in the ledger. It is just not current, with a visiting side rated first in the world and a home team rated sixth, and a 96-run margin the last time they met. India take the series, and comfortably, and the question Hagley Oval settles on Thursday is whether New Zealand can make this edition a contest or whether 2026 is the tour that stretches the ledger further.
