An Oddsworth Opinion
Where Ben Duckett's 167 ranks among Gaddafi Stadium's ODI innings
Ben Duckett's 167 off 132 balls against Sri Lanka has been greeted as close to the greatest one-day innings Gaddafi Stadium has seen. It is his highest ODI score, past the 165 that had been his best, and reports count it as his third ODI hundred in Lahore.
Even its own billing ranks it second. The 167 is the second-highest individual score ever made in an ODI at the ground, which leaves one bigger innings standing above it.
The Lahore hundred that ended in defeat
It came straight after 105 off 111 balls against Pakistan in his previous ODI, a hundred that finished on the losing side once Shadab Khan made his maiden ODI century and shared an 89-run stand for the last wicket to win by one wicket.
Duckett's last hundred in the city is already remembered as resistance in a lost cause.
How good an ODI opener is Ben Duckett?
A very good one. Our ratings have him as the 18th-best batter in men's ODIs, worth about four runs a match more than an average player, and over the last two years he averages 41 against 32.93 for top-seven batters.
When he kicks on, he goes big, and this time he went well quicker than a run a ball, when top-seven batters in men's ODIs score at a strike rate of 85.2.
Career average 43.0
Is it the best ODI innings at Gaddafi Stadium?
No, and the case for crowning it rests on enthusiasm rather than evidence. On runs it is second at the ground, by its own billing. On weight, it sits in a side our men's ODI team ratings place eighth of 12, with a 50% chance of beating an average side, and it has set Sri Lanka a challenging total without yet winning anything.
The second-highest score at Gaddafi Stadium is the honest ranking, and it climbs in memory only if England's bowlers defend what he built, as they could not last time.
